How to report stolen product photos on Facebook / Instagram (Meta)
When someone uses your product photos in a Facebook or Instagram post, Page, Marketplace/Shops listing, or ad, the copyright owner or authorized agent files Meta's copyright report form (separate Facebook vs Instagram entries). In-app “I don't like this” does not open the copyright queue. For heavy ad or Marketplace volume, enrolled Brand Rights Protection helps. You submit. Meta decides. The poster may receive your name and email, and can appeal or file a DMCA counter-notice.
What to expect
Meta states valid reports are often handled within about a day (per Meta's official guidance; individual cases may take longer). Ads stop serving. Capture Ad Library / ad ID and screenshots first.
What to prepare
- Original image file.
- Working links: post URL, Marketplace item, Ad Library link or ad ID; screenshot ads with timestamps.
- Discovery date; which image (carousel position, ad primary image, etc.).
- Side-by-side comparison + screenshot pack.
- A professional/enforcement email. Meta may share reporter name and email with the poster.
If you already use ProvenPix (optional)
Public verify page when the form asks where the original can be seen; evidence pack for post/listing/ad screenshots and comparisons.
Which page to open
- Policy hub: Meta copyright policy
- Facebook copyright form: facebook.com/help/contact/copyrightform
- Instagram: use the Instagram copyright form linked from that Meta copyright article. Do not cross-file FB content on the IG form.
- Choose Copyright (not trademark/counterfeit) for stolen photos.
- Optional at scale: Brand Rights Protection in Meta Business Suite. Public forms still work without enrollment.
Fields (labels vary slightly by form)
- Owner vs authorized representative (client/org name if agent).
- Contact name, email, address/phone as requested.
- Description of your copyrighted work + original link (verify page) or upload/description.
- Location of infringement: FB/IG URLs; for ads add Ad Library URL, advertiser name, placement, screenshots.
- Content-type checkboxes.
- Good-faith, accuracy, perjury ownership/authorization, signature.
- Expect details of your report to be shared with the person who posted the content.
Common failure modes
- Wrong in-app report reason.
- Vanished ads with no Ad Library clue.
- FB vs IG form mix-up; assuming Brand Rights Protection is open to everyone.
- Ignoring appeal or counter-notice mail.
How ProvenPix helps
- Public verify page when the form asks where the original can be seen.
- Evidence pack holds post/listing/ad screenshots and comparisons.
- Monitoring can surface some social/web copies into Add to complaint list (ad creatives are easy to miss).
What to check after you send it
- Confirmation email / in-app notices.
- Re-check the URL or Ad Library.
- If an organic post dies but the ad creative still runs, file again on the ad (or use Brand Rights Protection).
