How to report stolen product photos on Shopify or an independent store
First identify the stack. Shopify-hosted shops have an official Copyright infringement notice (DMCA) form. You must send direct links to each infringing page; a shop homepage is rejected. For a self-hosted store: check for Cloudflare (often forwards the complaint), then origin host / VPS / site builder abuse, then registrar if needed, and Google Search removal in parallel. There is no single button that takes down every indie store.
What to expect
After a valid Shopify counter-notice, content may return in about 10–14 business days unless you meet the lawsuit notice in Shopify's email. Cloudflare usually only forwards for pass-through CDN sites. Deletion still needs the origin host.
What to prepare
- Original image file.
- Page-level infringing URLs (product, landing, or blog pages; the site root alone is rejected).
- Discovery date; note which images and where on the page.
- Side-by-side comparison; screenshots (they can swap assets overnight).
- Legal name, contact info, readiness to sign the good-faith / accuracy / perjury statements.
If you already use ProvenPix (optional)
Verify page as the original-work link; complaint list exports one product URL per line.
Which page to open (decide in order)
- Shopify? Look for cdn.shopify.com / myshopify.com clues. Then: Shopify DMCA form . Trademark is a different form. Fallback: [email protected].
- Cloudflare in front? abuse.cloudflare.com → Copyright / DMCA. For pass-through CDN customers, Cloudflare typically forwards to the operator and host.
- Origin host / builder: find their DMCA/abuse contact. Same DMCA elements.
- In parallel: Google web/image search removals (search results only).
Fields (Shopify . required information)
- Legal name and contact information
- Direct links to the original work (or a clear description). public verify page works
- Direct links to each infringing Shopify URL . general shop link will not be accepted
- Description of what infringes and where (which images)
- Good-faith belief; accuracy; penalty of perjury ownership/authorization; signature
- Your notice (including contact details) may be shared with the merchant
Common failure modes
- Homepage-only URL.
- Wrong issue type; treating a Cloudflare forward as a deleted site.
- No screenshots when URLs change; ignoring the counter-notice window.
